Honouring Truth and Reconciliation — This September, Between Cultures Foundation pauses
to remember Canada’s dark history and the atrocities committed against the Indigenous Peoples...
As we reflect, we recognize that these past injustices continue to shape the lives of Indigenous communities today.
Their loss of language, culture, and self-identity is not only a tragic chapter of history but an ongoing reality
that calls us all to action. Reflection requires empathy. It calls us to see beyond history books and statistics,
and instead to truly honour the lives that were forever changed by the choices of past leaders. Let us ask ourselves:
What role can I play in ensuring that reconciliation is more than a word, that it becomes a lived practice in my community and my work?
One way we can begin is by showing respect for Indigenous perspectives through intentional daily actions whether by
including Indigenous stories and teachings in our practices, inviting Elders and Knowledge Keepers to share wisdom, or
creating experiences that highlight inclusivity, respect, and belonging. Small actions, when done with purpose, become
powerful steps toward healing.
In Early Years spaces especially, we must carefully consider the language we use to tell the history of Indigenous Peoples.
Children deserve to learn the truth in ways they can understand through stories, conversations, and experiences that nurture
empathy, respect, and honour for Indigenous cultures. By doing so, we plant the seeds of reconciliation in the next generation.
Together, educators, families, and communities can create learning environments that reflect Indigenous ways of knowing and being,
spaces where every child feels a sense of belonging and where Indigenous histories and perspectives are not only remembered but honoured.
Let this September, and every month, remind us of our shared responsibility: to listen, to learn, and to walk alongside Indigenous Peoples
in the spirit of truth, respect, and reconciliation.
